In one of the stranger dalliances we’ve seen in quite a while, perennial Hodinkee favorite Ulysse Nardin has partnered with a European tech firm to create the world’s first “Hybrid Smart phone”. It is called The Chairman (which should give you an idea of who their target market will be), and will be released in a run of only 1846 pieces (1846 was the year UN was founded).

They claim to be using kinetic energy based on an actual UN rotor on the back of the phone (see picture to right). The only other details we could find were that it will be hand assembled, will come completely unlocked (meaning it can be used on any network, although we’re sure only GSM) and “includes several components never seen before in a smart phone.”

As people who love technology and love watches, we have to admit we’re pretty excited. We’ll be sure to report back with more details as they are released at Basel World in the coming weeks.
